What can the WHAIC data tell you?

• Patient detail: This includes information about location of services within a healthcare setting, date of birth, gender, race & ethnicity, ZIP code and census block group. Users may want to:
  • Identify the number of patients seen in various settings in and out of the hospital setting.
  • Understand the usage of the ER vs. Urgent Care by patient county of residence, CPT code and diagnosis code.
  • Review data on how many patients were admitted from the emergency department or observation units and reasons for care.
  • Evaluate over or underutilization, total charges and payer details of the inpatient or outpatient departments.
  • Identify a group or subgroup of patients in a specific age range or racial group to review a specific disease, procedure or treatment/services. 
  • Understand the age, race, gender of patients inspecific neighborhoods to better understand and relay information on the opioid epidemic or number of flu cases in children or adults.
  • Learn the number of women who get breast exams in any given age range.
  • Identify prevalence of a certain diagnosis by ZIP code or census block. 

• Provider detail: This includes information on the providers involved with each encounter. Users may want to:
  • Identify the attending, operating, rendering or other providers who were responsible for the care.
  • Compare with other facilities on various measures such as total cost, inpatient days and types of procedures performed and other analytics to review market share.
  • Evaluate and/or analyze cost comparisons for use of Qualified Healthcare Providers (NP, ANP, CRNA, PA) in comparison to MD or DO practitioners.

• Payer detail:This information includes charges, diagnoses, procedures, date range, and the expected source of payment.  Users may want to:
  • Understand costs associated with epidemics or cancer rates.
  • Determine how many case managers can or should be assigned based on the number of specific admitting diagnoses.
  • Understand how to drive new business growth, better manage cost, population risk and frequency of services rendered.
  • Use of principal procedure in the outpatient setting can help hospitals and ASCs understand best practices in coding and billing.
  • Determine how many colonoscopies were performed in a given period.
  • Identify the types of payers; Commercial, Medicaid payments by State Agency, Medicare Payers and Worker’s Compensation.
  • Analyze insurance coverage for groups of encounters.

• Healthcare utilization:Reports based on healthcare utilization data supports higher quality, more efficient and cost-effective patient care. This includes inpatient and outpatient Patient-Level Administrative Data, Facility Utilization Data and other key reports on discharge status for patients, and services rendered at provider-based locations. Users may want to:
  • Review Case Mix Index (CMI) to measure the relative cost of resources needed to treat the mix of patients in each Wisconsin hospital during the calendar year.
  • ICD-9/ICD-10-CM code frequencies - view the statewide counts of each diagnosis code reported in the state from hospitals and ASCs. This includes principal, secondary and all external cause of injury codes reported in any given quarter, calendar year or aggregated timeframe.
  • Understand where the patient came from and/or where they went after they left the hospital. For example, identify where in the state, by ZIP code, patients come from for treatment at a specific hospital. 
  • Analyze the types of cases typically discharged to skilled nursing facilities, hospice centers or other providers, or home.
  • Understand frequency type and volume of readmissions.
  • Frequency and use of the emergency department, by diagnosis, or other patient detail.

• Other detail: This information includes accident state, leave days, condition, occurrence and value codes, as well as other detail used in these sections. Users may want to:
  • Identify car accidents in and out of state.
  • Identify the number of days a patient was inpatient but left the facility for a period during the stay or against medical advice.
  • Identify the number of homeless patients treated at each facility.
  • Identify the number of Unknown or Other types of genders in the data.
  • Identify if a condition is related to military or employment.
